Under the artistic direction of Tiago Manuel Soares and Napoleão Ribeiro, and with support from the Direção Geral das Artes, this book is built on the testimonies of musicians from some fifteen zés pereiras groups, several festival organisers and a number of drum and bagpipe makers.
These accounts allowed the authors to understand the roles of the many drumming groups in religious rituals, rites of passage and other ceremonies in north-western Portugal.
The research resulted in a work containing more than fifty drum patterns in score and video, as well as references to numerous documentary and iconographic sources gathered by the authors over several years. This makes the publication a reference for the study of the history of this musical practice, popularised since the end of the Civil War of 1830-1834 and already known as “zés pereiras” in Portugal and Brazil by the mid-nineteenth century.
